Even if women and girls represent half of the world’s population, they continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world.

World Health Organization (WHO) defines gender as: “socially constructed characteristics of women and men, such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men. It varies from society to society and can be changed.

Gender equality is a fundamental human right essential for peaceful societies and sustainable development, productivity and economic growth.

Women’s empowerment is the process in which women are allowed to accomplish life-determining decisions for different sectors in society, that they previously were denied.

Specifically, maritime gender equality means allowing women make a choice in the shipping sector which was long time male-dominated that means benefit for maritime education, get employment on board ship or on shore, access career path advantages, avoid glass ceiling situations and receive protection against bullying, harassment and isolation.

ECSR develops projects of research, mentorship from leadership training for women, role models conferences, workshops for gender equality awareness etc.
